One of the most common questions we get is, “When’s the best time to visit Kunming?” The truth is, Kunming’s mild climate makes it a great destination year-round ! So there isn’t really a “bad” time to visit, just different moods throughout the year. It just depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for!
Spring (March–May)
Comfortable temperatures, flowers in bloom, and great conditions for walking and sightseeing.
Autumn (September–November)
Clear skies, cooler air, and very pleasant travel days. This is often the favorite season for many visitors.
Summer (June–August)
Greener landscapes and fewer crowds in some areas, with occasional rain showers. Travel is still easy, just a bit more flexible.
Winter (December–February)
Quiet, calm, and uncrowded.
We usually suggest choosing your travel time based on how you like to travel — warmer or cooler, lively or quiet — rather than worrying about a “perfect” season.
Kunming has a very convenient metro system, with 6 operational lines and stations all over the urban centre and outer suburbs, including at the airport and high-speed rail terminals.
There are also e-bikes available to rent all over the city, which are a great way to get around while taking seeing the sights that Kunming has to offer.
Taxis are easy to hail, and Didi can be ordered using WeChat or Alipay.
Kunming is generally a safe and healthy place to stay, although there are a few practical health considerations to keep in mind.
At around 1,900 metres above sea level, the city’s altitude can take some adjustment, particularly during exercise, while air quality is generally good by Chinese city standards but can vary depending on weather and traffic.
Remember to wear sunscreen, as there is strong sunlight due to Kunming’s elevation.
With these basic precautions, most travellers can enjoy Kunming without significant health concerns.
Embrace a slower pace of life by unwinding in the many coffee shops, bars and bookshops around Green Lake. Further south, Dianchi Lake and the nearby Western Hills offer scenic walks, biking trails and panoramic views. A visit to the UNESCO-listed Stone Forest is not to be missed, where huge naturally formed stone pillars populate a boundless karst landscape. The city reflects Yunnan’s remarkable cultural diversity, with Han Chinese living alongside many ethnic minorities. Join the Yi and Tibetan people’s open-air evening dances, appreciate Bai artistic traditions, explore Buddhist temples, taste a bewildering range of snacks at the markets and experience the colourful festivals of different minorities throughout the year.
Kunming is a city that never sleeps. The evenings come alive through bustling street food markets, a thriving live music scene and nightclubs that add a youthful energy to the city’s relaxed atmosphere. Locals often round off the evening with an outdoor spicy Kunming-style barbecue, featuring charcoal-grilled meat, vegetables and mushrooms.
The most famous dish is the Crossing-the-Bridge Noodles, which consists of several courses of meat, veg and noodles cooked in boiling chicken broth. Other must-try specialties include Lu Mian (noodles in a thick gravy with minced meat), Steam Pot Chicken, and the many varieties of hotpot – especially the Wild Mushroom Hotpot, sure to persuade even the fussiest diners to become mushroom lovers. The cuisine is generally spicy, aromatic and rich.
By exploring Kunming its unique charm quickly becomes clear. Here, a slower rhythm of life, vibrant arts culture and diverse ethnic heritage come together to create a truly distinctive city.
