Beijing

Beijing, the capital city of China, lies in the north of the country on the edge of the North China Plain. With a rich history spanning over three thousand years, historic landmarks and architecture such as the iconic hutong alleyways and imperial palaces can be seen alongside thriving stylish restaurants, refreshing green spaces and contemporary art districts. Due to a mostly flat terrain, the city maintains its reputation as the ‘Bicycle Kingdom’ – streets are lined with rentable bikes, making it easy to explore.

Magnificent landmarks including the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, the Summer Palace and Yonghe Temple showcase the splendour of imperial China, demonstrating centuries of architectural craftsmanship and heritage. The city’s many museums house ancient artefacts which provide insight into the country’s history, art and culture. Predominantly home to Han people, Beijing brings together communities of various ethnic groups in China, such as Manchu, Hui and Mongol people, whose traditions and influences have continued to shape the city’s rich cultural identity.

The landscapes surrounding Beijing are a striking contrast to the urban metropolis. Mountain ranges such as the Western Hills and the Yanshan Mountains are characterised by lush forests and scenic trails, perfect for hikers and outdoor explorers. Further north, sections of the Great Wall of China wind through the rugged hills, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the distant city skyline. Lakes, reservoirs and natural areas nearby provide additional opportunities for cycling, lakeside walks and camping among Beijing’s varied landscapes.

Equally unique is Beijing’s cuisine, defined by its bold and robust flavours. Peking duck is the city’s most famous specialty, which is roasted to crispy perfection and served with thin pancakes, plum sauce, spring onion and cucumber. Other notable dishes include mutton hotpot, zhajiangmian (chewy noodles with pork and fried soybean sauce) and ma doufu (mashed tofu with an earthy, tangy flavour). For more adventurous eaters, the distinctive luzhu – pork intestines stew – is rich, hearty and well worth trying.

China’s political and cultural centre is a perfect destination for history enthusiasts, lovers of culture and curious adventurers.
