Overview
This trip starts in Beijing and ends in Shanghai. You’ll go west from Beijing to Xi’an and Chengdu, then up to Jiuzhaigou National Park, east to Zhangjiajie, south to Guilin, and finally, Shanghai. It covers China’s highlights without rushing. You’ll walk the Great Wall, meet the Terracotta Warriors, see pandas at play hike through a national park that looks like another planet, and cruise the Li River. The route is long, but the pace is reasonable.
Highlights
Mutianyu Great Wall
Watchtowers guard sections of the wall. You can take a cable car up, walk along the wall, and enjoy the views across forested mountains.
Temple of Heaven
This is where the emperor used to pay an annual visit to pray for good harvests. The main hall is round, the base square—representing an old Chinese belief about heaven above and earth below. Local people gather at sunrise to sing, dance, and play traditional instruments in the surrounding park.
Terracotta Army
A UNESCO World Heritage site. Pit 1 is the size of an airplane hangar, with row upon row of life‑sized soldiers facing east, ready for battle. No two faces are the same.
Panda Base
You can see adult pandas chewing bamboo – cubs playfully tumbling around and learn about the special care the pandas are provided with at this research base.
Sanxingdui Museum
A permanent exhibition of a bronze age civilization that left no written records. The artifacts show an ancient culture unlike any other in China; bronze masks with bulging eyes, a 4‑meter bronze tree, a gold scepter.
Zhangjaijie Grand Canyon
Do you dare to walk a 430-meter-long glass bridge that is suspended 300 meters above a canyon?
Li River cruise
Four hours of floating between cragged karst peaks. The river bends around limestone hills that rise straight out of the water.
Yu Garden
A Ming dynasty garden in the old part of Shanghai. Ponds with goldfish, zigzag bridges, rockeries made of porous limestone from Lake Tai and an atmospheric traditional tea house. Here, you might forget you are in a modern megapolis.
Why take this tour and not another Chinese trip?
A pace that makes sense.
Stay two nights in most places, enough time to settle and explore at leisure.
See how China changes.
Not just in attitude or temperature, but in pace of development, architecture, food, and landscapes. From the leisurely life in the Beijing hutongs to the Terracotta Army in Xi’an, pandas and ancient bronze age culture of Chengdu, the cliffs of Zhangjiajie, and the prosperous center of business that is prosperous Shanghai.
Real experience, no performance.
For instance, our tour takes you walking through hutong lanes, sipping at leisure in a traditional teahouse, or watching locals practice tai chi in a park. You’ll experience local everyday life as a participant.
Private tour, no groups.
Your own car, your own guide, your own pace. Want to skip something? Fine. Want to stay longer at the monastery? Tell your guide.
Local English-speaking guides only.
Our guides live in these towns. They know the side streets, the family-run noodle shop. We don’t fly guides in from other cities.
