Overview
China, far and wide
As one of our most far-reaching tours, this trip encompasses both natural beauty and historical heritage. It covers a vast range of landscapes, from sandstone cliffs to snowy mountains and subtropical valleys.
Travellers will get to experience China in great depth, seeing the most renowned sites in the North, South and East of the country as well as many hidden gems that are often overlooked.
Highlights
The Forbidden City
Historically the centre of power during the Ming and Qing dynasties, Beijing’s Imperial Palace complex includes one of China’s largest museums, as well as the grand Imperial Garden and the Palace of Qianlong.
Yungang Grottoes
16 km outside of the city of Datong (Shanxi Province), you can see over 51,000 Buddhist sculptures and temples carved into the sandstone mountainside, dating back to the fifth century.
Terracotta Army and Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum
Located in Xi’an (Shaanxi Province), these famous figures depict thousands of soldiers, chariots and horses originally created to guard the first emperor of China in the afterlife. They can be viewed at the original archeological site and the on-site museum, along with the emperor’s tomb.
Impression Lijiang Show
The city of Lijiang in Yunnan may be small, but has a profoundly rich culture and outstanding mountainous terrain. The must-see Impression Lijiang cultural show presents the traditions of the native Naxi, Bai and Yi people through song and dance, with the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain behind – choreographed by world-renowned director Zhang Yimou.
Kunming’s Stone Forest
Huge naturally formed pillars of stone populate this area as far as the eye can see, making for a fantastic spectacle. There is a myriad of caves to explore. Here, the culture of the local Sani people is celebrated, with much of the landscape being woven into their folklore and textile craft. Try to find ‘Ashima,’ said to be a legendary heroine who turned to stone while waiting for her lover to return.
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
Known for being the visual inspiration for the movie Avatar, the landscape here is filled with towering vertical rock columns in the misty subtropics of Hunan. Lovers of natural beauty will enjoy observing the deep canyons and dense forests, especially from the world-famous Grand Canyon Glass Bridge.

Frequently asked questions
Though we run our tours all year round, the best time of year would be September-November, when the temperature is comfortable in the north and the rainy season has mostly finished in the south, or April-May, when spring is in full bloom and the weather is fair nationwide. Bear in mind that summertime can be very hot and humid in the north and Yunnan has its rainy season from June to September.
The Forbidden City, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Tiger Leaping Gorge and Stone Forest will require a few hours on your feet. Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Tianmen Mountain have cable cars to the top.
Altitudes reach between 2000-3300m during most activities in Yunnan. Altitude sickness is not usually an issue, but we recommend you walk slowly and talk to your guide if you feel uncomfortable.
Be prepared for change in weather conditions – though disposable raincoats are often available, it’s a good idea to bring a light jacket, waterproof clothing and/or a small umbrella. Comfortable walking shoes are also recommended.
Important information
- Single Supplement. The price listed is for two people sharing one room. If you require a private room or if there is no one else in the group to share a room with, a single room supplement will apply. The single supplement fee is outlined in our price list.

- Weather. During the summer months (June to September) Yunnan has a rainy season. It won’t be raining 24/7, but we recommend bringing a small umbrella that fits in a backpack.
