Likan Waterfall

In the Dai language, Likan Waterfall is known as Likan Nan duo Tower, meaning “a place where monkeys often appear.” Situated 5 kilometers northeast of the picturesque Ximeng Wa(Va) Autonomous County, the waterfall is nestled deep within the mountains, a secluded paradise that remains relatively unknown to outsiders. This serene location offers an unparalleled blend of natural beauty and tranquility.

The waterfall is formed by the convergence of the Donglang River and Dongsuo River, cascading step by step down the mountainous terrain. The sound of the roaring water fills the air, creating a majestic atmosphere as it flows through the rugged rocks. Surrounding the waterfall is a lush, dense forest, with the waterfall itself partially hidden, evoking a sense of mystery and awe. The area also features thrilling Wa ethnic vine rope bridges and medicinal sand kernel forests, adding to the adventure and beauty of the landscape.

In Likan, visitors can experience the excitement of crossing the swaying Tengsuo Bridge while being showered by the mist from the waterfall. The view of the cascading water and the surrounding countryside offers a picturesque scene, capturing the essence of Dai culture and nature. Likan Waterfall is a perfect destination for modern urbanites seeking to rejuvenate their spirits, relieve stress, and reconnect with the serenity of the natural world.

In the nearby Likan Dai village, home to 63 Dai households, the sound of rushing water fills the air, and glimpses of the waterfall can be seen peeking through the dense forest. Led by locals, visitors follow a quiet, cool path paved with slate stones that winds through the forest. The air is filled with the sounds of chirping cicadas and the steady flow of water, creating an immersive experience of tranquility.

After about a kilometer, two thatched pavilions emerge, providing a peaceful spot for tourists to rest. These pavilions, built specifically for visitors, offer a respite amidst the beauty of the forest. According to the staff from the Ximeng Tourism Bureau, Likan Waterfall was only officially developed in 2004, and to this day, the waterfall remains free of admission charges. Infrastructure improvements, including roads and walking paths, have enhanced access to the area, making it even more accessible for nature enthusiasts.

Seasonal Beauty and Thrilling Views

The waterfall presents a dramatically different sight depending on the season. In winter, the water flow is clearer but smaller, offering a quieter scene. However, during the rainy season, the waterfall transforms into a spectacular natural display, with water roaring as it cascades from above, filling the air with mist and power. On winter mornings, when fog blankets the area, the waterfall appears to fall from the sky, creating an almost ethereal, magical atmosphere.

The Rattan Bridge

A unique feature of the Likan Waterfall area is the rattan bridge, located about 20 meters downstream of the waterfall. This bridge, made of bamboo woven along both sides with wooden boards underneath, is narrow at the bottom and wide at the top. Walking across it, visitors can feel the sway of the bridge beneath their feet while gazing up at the majestic waterfall and down at the rushing river below.

The scenic beauty of the area, combined with the thrill of walking across the rattan bridge, makes Likan Waterfall an unforgettable destination, especially for those seeking a deeper connection with nature and an escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
