Altay sits in the far north of Xinjiang, close to the borders with Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia. Forested mountains, grasslands and clear rivers give the region a very different character from the deserts of southern Xinjiang. It is also home to Kazakh and other communities with strong pastoral traditions.
