Shangri-La is a high-altitude city nestled within the mountainous Tibetan Plateau in northwest Yunnan. It is surrounded by snow-capped peaks, alpine valleys and vast rural landscapes. It has long been an important centre of Khampa Tibetan culture and Tibetan Buddhism, reflecting centuries of cultural exchange along the ancient Tea Horse Road. Standing above the city is the impressive Songzanlin Monastery, the largest Tibetan monastery in Yunnan and the home to hundreds of monks and Lamas today. In addition to its Tibetan majority, Shangri-La is also home to a diverse range of ethnic communities, including the Han, Bai, Yi and Lisu peoples.
The region has ample opportunity for adventure, such as hiking in the gorgeous Meili Snow Mountain Range, biking around Napa Lake, or driving through the countryside and surrounding villages to to experience the area’s Tibetan heritage. Visitors can also enjoy horse riding across the grasslands, explore the dramatic scenery of Balagezong Scenic Area or bathe in natural hot springs.
Wander the charming, cobbled streets of Shangri-La’s Old Town, lined with traditional wooden architecture that houses shops, cafés and bars. Climb to the hilltop prayer wheel for panoramic views across the town before enjoying the lively communal dancing in the main square each evening.
The local cuisine is primarily influenced by the Khampa people’s highland cattle agriculture, with staples such as yak hotpot, yak butter tea, nutritious Shangri-La yoghurt and rustic barley cake, which goes especially well with hot yak cheese in butter. Look out for the Nixi Clay Pot Chicken, cooked in a rich broth using a special clay pot unique to the region.
Whether you have a thirst for adventure or are seeking peaceful reflection among snow-capped mountains, a trip to Shangri-La will be truly unforgettable.
