Diqing occupies the highlands of northwestern Yunnan, where deep river valleys rise towards the mountains of the Tibetan Plateau. Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, alpine meadows and snow-covered peaks give the region a distinctly different character from southern Yunnan, with Shangri-La and Deqin providing gateways into the high mountains.
