Kunming is swept into a gentle “blue-purple storm” as jacarandas burst into bloom in May. Kunming, known as the Spring City, transforms in the early summer breeze – its streets, riverbanks and university campuses all blanketed in the soft glow of jacaranda flowers. Originally from South-America, this elegant tree has found a second home in Kunming city, where its short but stunning blossom season turns the city into a fairytale-like “City of Blue Mist”.
When to see them?
The best time to catch jacarandas in full bloom is from late April to around late May.
Discover the charm of Jiaochang Road in full bloom
Jiaochang Road is Kunming’s most iconic jacaranda-viewing spots. Take Metro Line 4 to Sujiatang Station with a 5-minutes walk. You may also hop on a taxi or a shared- bike – it’s easy either way.
The famous purpule jacarandas boulevard here stretches approximately 2 km. A leisurely walk takes about 30-45 minutes, but plan for 1-2 hours if you stop for photos or enjoy the open market.
1.Ride the Jacaranda Sightseeing Bus
Kick off your purple-themed journey aboard the Jacaranda Sightseeing Bus, decorated with vibrant floral designs for the blooming season. Tickets are 25 CNY per person, including a refreshing jacaranda ice cream – the perfect treat for a spring day! Even better, your ticket allows unlimited rides on the same day, so you may hop on and off as you wish.
2.Jacaranda theme Open Market
In the middle of Jiaochang Road, there is a Jacaranda-themed open Market. The market is alive with local crafts, handmade jewelry, and Jacaranda-themed souvenirs, covering sections such as “Fragrant Cuisine” and “Intangible Cultural Heritage Handcrafted Art”, plus special drinks made from Jacaranda, purple desserts, ice cream in the shape of jacaranda flowers, and intangible cultural heritage skills experiences (such as printing and fish lantern making).
It is possible to collect Jacaranda stamps at different spots along the way – a perfect way to commemorate your floral adventure.
