Good news! Being an active shopper in China – you might be eligible for a tax refund when you leave!
On April the 26th, the Ministry of Commerce, along with five other government departments, announced new measures for the departure tax refund. These updates include lowering the minimum purchase threshold for refunds, raising the cash refund ceiling, expanding the network of participating stores and range up the products eligible for refunds.
Enhance the shopping experience of international travelers by expanding the number of tax refund stores across the country. Back in the days, these stores were mainly in first tier cities like Beijing and Shanghai, with very few destinations for international tourists on tax refund. The new measures encourage the establishment of tax refund shops in busy commercial districts, pedestrian streets, tourist attractions, cultural venues, airports and frequently visited spots. This will improve the accessibility of tax refunds, making it much easier for travelers to take advantage of these benefits.
Additionally, the starting range of departure tax refunds reduced from 500 yuan to 200 yuan, while the cash refund limit raised from 10,000 yuan to 20,000 yuan, with no upper limit for transfer refunds. This expansion of tax refund stores and the increase in the available refund amount aiming to bring shopping and refunds experiences with conveniency for international travelers.
