Yuanmou Earth Forest
Yuanmou Earth Forest is a stunning natural landscape composed of pillar-like formations created by wind and water erosion. These unique landforms, shaped by sedimentary deposits over millions of years, are found primarily in basins or valleys. The Yuanmou Earth Forest, located in Yunnan Province, is the most iconic and well-known example of this phenomenon, and it provides a vivid reflection of ancient geographical changes and landscape development.

As one of the most extraordinary natural wonders in China and the world, Yuanmou Earth Forest is the result of millions of years of tectonic movement and erosion. Over time, the elements have sculpted the land into bizarre and fascinating shapes, attracting photographers, geologists, and renowned filmmakers. The site has been featured in movies like The Promise (无极) and Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles (千里走单骑).
The formations of Yuanmou Earth Forest look like a forest of earth pillars from a distance, creating a surreal and awe-inspiring scene that continues to captivate visitors from around the world.
Classification Based on Formation and Pillar Shapes
Yuanmou Earth Forest is divided into four types based on its formation and the characteristics of the soil pillars. The varied shapes and types of the pillars are mixed and scattered throughout the landscape, giving the Earth Forest a rich variety of forms and a constantly changing appearance. These types include:
- Conical Pillars: Shaped like cones, they are the most common and striking feature in the region.
- Peak Cluster Pillars: Resembling a group of peaks or spires, they create a dramatic, mountainous look.
- Snow-Capped Pillars: These appear as towering formations with a peak that looks like snow, offering a unique visual experience.
- Wall-Like Pillars: These formations resemble walls or fences, adding to the architectural feel of the landscape.
Best Time to Visit
Avoid the rainy season (June to October) as the soil in the earth forest becomes soft and muddy, making it difficult to explore and affecting the landscape.
Best time to visit is during the dry season (April to May) when the weather is sunny, offering great photo opportunities. Be sure to bring sunscreen and plenty of drinking water.
For sunrise and sunset photos, it’s recommended to visit in winter, as the sun rises and sets more slowly, allowing for more time to capture the perfect shot.
Getting to the earth forest
Visitors will first reach the visitor center, and from there, it’s about a 3 km distance to the main scenic area.
There are shuttles that transport visitors between the center and the scenic spots. The total walking distance within the area is around 6 km, so comfortable shoes are recommended.
