Tianfeng Mountain

Tianfeng Mountain, also known as “Yusun Peak,” and commonly referred to as “Laojun Mountain” or “Laojun Hall,” stands as a towering symbol of both natural beauty and cultural heritage in Xiangyun County, Dali Prefecture, Yunnan Province. With its pyramid-shaped peak rising to 2,578 meters, the steep terrain and dramatic landscape, dotted with towering peaks, offer a breathtaking vista, making it one of the region’s most awe-inspiring landmarks.

Laojun Hall, the centerpiece of the mountain, was originally constructed during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty. This traditional wooden structure, with its single eave gable roof supported by two dragon pillars, exudes a timeless elegance. A giant plaque inscribed with the words “Moral Five Thousand ( Tao Te Ching with Five Thousand words)” hangs prominently in front of the hall, dedicated to the veneration of the Grand Master Laojun (Lord Lao Zi). Adjacent to the hall is the Stone Carving Merit Workshop, through which visitors enter the magnificent Jade Emperor Pavilion, where the architecture transitions from the rectangular Xieshan roof at the lower level to the upper octagonal pyramidal roof without arches.

Tianfeng Mountain is renowned for its rich Taoist heritage, blending elements of Taoism with aspects of the other two major Chinese religions. Its wooden carvings and architectural artistry have earned it the title of “Number One Taoist Mountain” in this region, marking it as a significant Taoist site. The mountain is a key scenic spot in Xiangyun County, with dense forests surrounding the Tianfeng Temple, adding to the site’s mystical atmosphere.

The mountain is also home to some of the most striking natural landscapes, including the Nine Peaks Competition and winding gullies that carve through the terrain. The Taihang Mountain barrier and the stunning Red Rock Canyon enhance the picturesque surroundings, creating an atmosphere of serenity and wonder, making it feel as though visitors have entered a fairyland. In March, the Twilight Snow Heavenly Peak offers a particularly enchanting experience, where the heavy atmosphere of the peak blends with light snowflakes, creating a sense of peaceful tranquility.

Thanks to its unique geographical position, Tianfeng Mountain is rich in lush vegetation and diverse wildlife, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts. The area’s natural beauty is perfect for outdoor activities, and climbing to the summit not only provides a physical challenge but also rewards visitors with sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, leaving them with a sense of accomplishment and awe.

Tianfeng Mountain remains a must-visit destination for those seeking to experience both the natural grandeur and spiritual depth of this sacred Taoist site.

The Tianfeng Mountain Song Festival

The Tianfeng Mountain Song Festival, a vibrant celebration that brings together centuries of tradition and cultural heritage. Held annually on the 15th day of the second lunar month and has been celebrated for over 500 years, finds its roots in the Taoist “Laojun Christmas Festival” and remains a key part of the cultural fabric today in this region.

The Song Festival’s origins date back to the 57th year of the Qianlong reign in the Qing Dynasty, and it is now considered an intangible cultural heritage of Yunnan Province. Since the Ming Dynasty, it has been a grand event where people from various ethnic groups, including folk artists, inheritors of intangible cultural heritage come together to celebrate and exchange culture, art, and daily life. This long-standing tradition is a remarkable fusion of cultural, social, and economic exchanges.

At the heart of the Song Festival, visitors are treated to a rich display of local customs and talents, such as the playing of the sheng, an ancient Chinese wind instrument, folk songs in small tunes, performances of traditional dances, and the enchanting sounds of ancient cave music. The festival’s atmosphere is filled with music and joy, as the wind rustles through the forest, the sounds of the guqin drift from the clouds, and the fragrance of tea fills the air.

The festival offers an immersive cultural experience, where attendees can listen to guqin music, enjoy traditional tea ceremonies, and unwind in the peaceful ambiance of Tianfeng Mountain’s historical setting. It beautifully combines the timeless charm of intangible cultural heritage with the rhythms of modern life, making it a memorable event that transcends generations and continues to thrive in today’s world.

The Tianfeng Mountain Song Festival is not just an event, it’s a living tradition that connects the past with the present and offers a rare opportunity to experience the heart of Xiangyun’s culture in a truly unique and joyous way.
