Nie Er’s Former Residence
The Nie Er Former Residence, located in the Hohua Pond Community of Yuxi City’s Hongta District, is the ancestral home of the famous composer Nie Er. The residence is situated at 3 North Gate Street, Yu Xing Street, facing east, and covers an area of 96.27 square meters. Built in the late Qing Dynasty by Nie Er’s great-grandfather, Nie Lianden, it was later passed down to his father, Nie Hongyi. The house has a history of over 100 years and officially opened to the public on July 17, 2005, in honor of Nie Er’s memorial day. Since July 17, 2011, the residence has been freely accessible to visitors.

The Nie Er Former Residence Memorial Hall is a single-theme museum dedicated to the life of Nie Er, featuring a two-story, traditional Qing Dynasty wooden structure with a pitched roof. The building consists of a main house and side rooms, arranged in a layout known as “Yunnan’s Single Stamp.” The museum is divided into two main exhibition areas: the Life Scenario Reproduction Zone, which is based on the recollections of Nie Er’s third brother, Nie Xulun, and reflects the living conditions of that era, and the Image and Document Exhibition Zone, which showcases Nie Er’s connection to Yuxi and important historical events related to his life.
Yuxi is the hometown of Nie Er, the composer of the national anthem and a celebrated figure in Chinese music. The Nie Er Former Residence is well-preserved and remains a testament to his legacy. Not far from the residence, the old street is home to several historic sites, including the former location of Wenxingxiang Commercial House, Yuxi Confucian Temple, and the former residences of Li Hongxiang and Zheng Yili. After restoration and preservation, these historic buildings have been transformed into small museums, showcasing the entrepreneurial stories of Yuxi’s ancestors as well as the city’s history in water conservancy and mining. These museums also highlight the spirit of Yuxi’s people—bold, pioneering, and innovative. While visitors enjoy the street’s local snacks, they can also explore these small museums to fully appreciate the unique cultural essence and charm of Nie Er’s hometown.
