What Is Napa Lake?
Napa Lake is a seasonal wetland and grassland area in northwest Yunnan, around 20 minutes from Shangri-La Old Town. During the wetter season, large parts of the basin fill with water, while in drier seasons the lake becomes open grassland.
The area is closely connected to local Tibetan communities, and many families still graze yaks and horses here throughout the year. Most visitors come for the scenery, slower pace, and open views across the valley rather than organised sightseeing.
Roads and walking trails around the lake pass small villages, grazing fields, and mountain viewpoints.
What Makes Napa Lake Special?
Around Shangri-La, many roads pass through mountain ranges and built-up areas, but Napa Lake opens into a broad valley, with open skies and wide stretches of grassland defining the landscape. Best Time to Visit Napa Lake
Summer and early autumn are usually when the lake holds the most water and the grasslands appear greener.
During autumn and winter, the area becomes drier and more golden in colour. Earlier in the day is often calmer, with softer light across the valley before weather and cloud cover change later in the afternoon.
Cold temperatures are common during winter, especially in the mornings.
