Jade Lake Village

Jade Lake Village is a small Naxi village on the slopes of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, set beside the lake it is named after. Here, you’ll find traditional stone and wood houses, clear spring-fed ponds, and exhibitions showcasing Naxi culture.

What is Jade Lake Village?

Jade Lake Village, also known as Yuhu Village, is located 18 kilometres outside of Lijiang Old Town in the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Scenic Area.

Naxi characteristics are visible throughout the village. Traditional houses often feature carved fish which are believed to protect the wooden structures from fire. Other Naxi-style decorations and Dongba script can also be seen across the area.

History of Jade Lake Village

The village was originally built for the palace guards and deer-keepers of the Mu family who were important figures in Naxi society during the Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties.

The Jade Lake is an artificial lake excavated by the Mu family to reflect the sky and mountains.

The Dongba script can be found in many parts of the village. This is the unique script of the Naxi people featuring more than 1,500 pictographs.

The Naxi people follow the Dongba religion, a form of shamanism influenced by Tibetan Buddhism with a strong connection to nature.

What makes the village unique

Today, the village maintains its strong connection to nature. This can be seen in its gardens, surrounding forested mountains, and crystal-clear pools.

Beside the lake stands a statue of Sanduo, the Naxi Goddess of nature. Look out for a plaque in front of the statue – it is written as an apology to the goddess, for environmental destruction caused by humans.

The village’s cultural heritage is reflected in other religious statues and artefacts as well as traditional architecture, clothing and music.

The lake has clear jade-coloured water and is home to the golden salmon, unique to this region of Yunnan.

The village combines cultural history with scenic views of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

Time at Jade Lake Village

Time here is usually spent learning more about local culture while enjoying the open forested scenery and surrounding mountains.

The area has several exhibitions including spaces dedicated to Dongba rituals, cultural relics, and traditional wine-making techniques.

Many travellers combine a visit here with other destinations in the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain area such as the Impressions of Lijiang Show, Blue Moon Valley and Spruce Meadow.

As the village is compact, it can be explored comfortably in 1-2 hours.

When to visit

Like much of Lijiang, the village has generally mild weather. However, due to its proximity to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the temperatures can drop at night and in winter.

Spring and autumn often bring sunny days with clear views of the surrounding mountains.

Due to its high altitude, UV levels can be strong throughout the year, so sun protection is useful.

Does Jade Lake Village suit your travel style?

Jade Lake Village suits travellers who want to learn more about the culture and history of Lijiang and enjoy scenic views of the mountains and crystal-clear water.

Although it is called a village, the site feels more like a cultural centre than a lived-in village such as Baisha Village.
