Attractions – Dukezong Ancient Town

One of the best-preserved Tibetan towns in China sits in the northwestern part of Yunnan.

Dukezong Ancient Town brings together colourful Tibetan homes, temples and pagodas, set among mountain landscapes.

What is Dukezong Ancient Town

The ancient Tibetan town is in Shangri-La, Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, sitting at 3,200 metres above sea level.

Dukezong is built around a Buddhist temple that sits atop a hill and is visible from most parts of the town.

It is the most well-known Tibetan town in Yunnan, with Tibetan culture reflected in the architecture, religious sites and daily life.

History of Dukezong Ancient Town

Dukezong has a history of over 1,300 years.

The town’s design was inspired by Shambala, a mythical city of spiritual importance from Tibetan Buddhist scriptures. The city was said to have been hidden in the Meili Snow Mountains and shaped like an eight-petal lotus flower.

The name ‘Dukezong’ means ‘Moonlight City’ in Tibetan.

When building the city, a local white clay was used to coat the walls of the houses, creating a silver sheen in the moonlight and inspiring its name.

Dukezong was an important stop along the Tea Horse Road, connecting Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet.

In 1688 Dukezong became an important trade centre between Tibet and the Qing Dynasty which ruled China at the time.

Unfortunately, a large fire in 2014 destroyed much of the city. The city was reconstructed by local artisans using wood and stone to rebuild houses in the original style and it reopened to the public in 2016.

What makes this town special

Along the zigzagging paths, prayer flags are strung along the wooden facades of the traditional Tibetan dwellings.

Visitors will pass doorways decorated with embroidered fabrics and Tibetan artworks.

Streets lead up to the Guishan temple sitting atop a small hill, where views open across Dukezong and beyond to the surrounding mountain landscapes.

The lanes of the ancient town are filled with shops and markets selling jewellery, thangka paintings and local crafts.

The Songzanlin Monastery, located a couple of kilometers outside of the town, is Yunnan’s largest Tibetan monastery and a highlight of the area.

Time in Dukezong Ancient Town

One of the most recognisable sites in Dukezong is the central Guishan Park.

The hill is the highest point in the town, featuring a Tibetan Buddhist temple, a large golden prayer wheel, and views over the roofs to the snow-capped mountains in the colder months.

The gold-plated bronze prayer wheel is the largest of its kind in the world, requiring multiple people to spin it.

Square Street is the main street of the old town, with white stupas, renovated traditional-style buildings and cafes.

In the evening, the main square transforms from a day market to a gathering place for music and Tibetan line dancing. Visitors are encouraged to join in the dancing.

Further away from the square, visitors can find quiet lanes with unrestored buildings that retain their rustic charm.

The town also has a variety of teahouses, Tibetan restaurants and venues to watch traditional performances.

A couple of kilometers outside of the ancient town you’ll find the Songzanlin Monastery, also known as ‘Little Potala’ due to its resemblance to Potala Palace.

The monastery is situated by a lake that reflects its red walls and golden roofs.

When to visit

Spring is ideal for viewing blossoming flowers at Guishan Park, with mild temperatures. The Tibetan New Year (Losar) also falls in this season.

Autumn offers clear skies and summer brings warmer weather and greener landscapes.

Winter gets very cold, with temperatures ranging from 12°C to -9°C at night. However, the season offers a serene atmosphere with fewer tourists and the potential of snowy vistas.

Early mornings, late afternoons, and weekdays are usually quieter.

Midday, weekends, and public holidays often bring larger crowds.

In the evening, the prayer wheel is illuminated and nightly dancing takes place in the main square.
