What is the Confucius Temple
The Confucius Temple in Jianshui is the second largest Confucius temple in China, showing the far-reaching influence of Confucianism. The temple grounds are located in the centre of Jianshui Ancient Town, covering a large area with courtyards, halls, shrines, ponds and pavilions connected by stone paths.
History of the temple
In ancient China, Confucian temples served as both places of education and sites where people paid respect to Confucius. The temple was established over 700 years ago during the Yuan dynasty. The temple was a place of learning where imperial examinations were once held.
It was built in the style of the Confucius Temple in Confucius’ hometown Qufu. The palace-style layout has 37 buildings including halls, towers, gates and pavilions which were built across successive dynasties.

What makes the temple special
The Confucius Temple is one of the most well-known destinations in Jianshui due to its cultural importance and scenic grounds. Trees line the walkways between halls, and views of traditional pavilions, courtyards and ponds create a tranquil atmosphere.
The architecture of the temple reflects traditional palace design with a symmetrical layout, intricately carved wooden details and tiled roofs. The tall gates are particularly impressive, with tiered roofs, bright patterns and stone pillars carved into the shape of animals.
