Lugu Lake
Located in the northwest of the Yunnan Plateau, Lugu Lake is a stunning alpine lake sitting at an elevation of 2,685 meters (8,809 feet), making it the highest lake in Yunnan Province. The lake lies at the heart of Ningliang Yi Autonomous County, and its middle section forms the border between Ninglang County in Yunnan and Yanqing County in Sichuan.

The formation of Lugu Lake is believed to have been shaped by geological faulting during the Late Cenozoic era, giving rise to its deep waters and tranquil environment. Surrounded by rugged mountains, the lake boasts a diverse landscape with five islands, four peninsulas, fourteen bays, and seventeen beaches. This natural beauty makes Lugu Lake a picturesque and peaceful destination, often referred to as the “Mother Lake” by the Mosuo people, an ethnic group known for their unique matriarchal culture.
In addition to its breathtaking scenery, Lugu Lake is rich in cultural history, offering visitors the opportunity to explore traditional Mosuo culture, practice of walking marriages, and experience the lifestyle of one of China’s most distinctive communities.
