Top 10 Attractions in Kunming

Are you thinking about spending two to three days in Kunming and not sure yet what to do? We had a look around and put together our own list of Top 10 sites in and around our city. Perfectly for transit stays in Kunming (72h visa-free stay).

Kunming is the capital and largest city of Yunnan Province in Southwestern China. As a prefecture-level city, it is the political, economic and cultural center of Yunnan. Furthermore, it is the seat of the provincial government. It is also home to several universities, museums, galleries and other important economic, cultural, and educational institutions. The headquarters of many of Yunnan's large businesses are in Kunming as well. The city was important during World War II as a Chinese military center, American air base, and transport terminus for the Burma Road.

Kunming usually serves as the first destination for Yunnan's growing number of visitors. With lots of places of interest spread all over the city, Kunming's closer and farther vicinity is well known for its beautiful, peculiar, breathtaking and unique natural landscapes.

All of below mentioned attractions are best to visit during the week. On weekends it might get crowded.

 

No. 01: Dianchi Lake

Entrance Fee: free

About: In Kunming's southwest, go for a walk along the promenade, watch and feed some seaguls, take a boat trip, circle the lake by bike (for athlets only!)

 

No. 02: Stone Forest

Entrance Fee: CNY 175 (optional shuttle bus: CNY 25)

Opening Hours: 08:00-18:00

About: 90km east of the city, Kunming Prefecture's prime visiting destination, UNESCO World Heritage, unique karst formations

 

No. 03: Western Hills & Dragon Gate

Entrance Fee: CNY 90 (including cable car & shuttle bus)

Opening Hours: 08:00-18:00

About: In Kunming's southwest, pretty steep, peaks of up to 2500m, splendid views over Dianchi Lake and Kunming

 

No. 04: Jiuxiang Caves

Entrance Fee: CNY 105 including 1 way cable car

Opening Hours: 08:30-17:30

About: 100km east of Kunming City, suitable for a trip in combination with Stone Forest

 

No. 05: Flower & Bird Market

Entrance Fee: free

Opening Hours: the whole day

About: In downtown Kunming, with some of the few 'old' buildings of Kunming, buy souvenirs and / or animals, in & outdoors

 

No. 06: Golden Temple

Entrance Fee: CNY 30

Opening Hours: 07:00-19:00

About: In the city's north, connected to a big and hilly park, close to the former Kunming Expo Garden

 

No. 07: Yuantong Temple

Entrance Fee: CNY 8

Opening Hours: 08:00-17:00

About: Located centrally in the city, close to Green Lake Park, one of the more popular temples in Kunming

 

No. 08: Bamboo Temple (Qiongzhu Si)

Entrance Fee: CNY 6

Opening Hours: 08:00-17:00

About: Quietly located in the hilly woods west of Kunming City, well reachable by bus, great place to chill out away from the bustling city, especially in summer.

Entrance Fee: free

Opening Hours: 9:30-17:00

About: In the city center, interesting photographies of Kunming in the early 20th century, all about Kunming's role in the 2nd world war

 

No. 10 Dongchuan Red Soil Land

Entrance Fee: nope!

Opening Hours: every and all day

About: Some 170km north of Kunming, nice view of red terraced fields, popular among photograhers, best during sunrise & sunset, thus with a night accommodation
